JASCO Applied Sciences has teamed up with SMELTS™ (Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society), a non-profit developing new solutions for commercial fishing that reduce or eliminate the risks of whale entanglement and ghost gear. Together they deployed the first ‘Ropeless Whale Recorder Raft’.

To cut down the chances of whale entanglement with fishing gear, researchers and developers are testing technology that would eliminate the need for the vertical lines that run between lobster traps on the seafloor and buoys bobbing on the surface.Lobstermen are facing tighter restrictions to help with the recovery of the endangered North Atlantic right whales and so-called “ropeless” fishing is seen as one of the potential ways to ease that burden.

Fishermen, engineers, and scientists are working together to test and develop fishing gear that has no buoy lines in the water column to save the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. There are less than 400 North Atlantic Right Whales left in the world and many right whale deaths can be attributed to entanglement.

In January, Massachusetts lobstermen were banned from most state waters until late spring to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales that typically spend February to May feeding in the area. The new restrictions extend and expand an existing closure that’s long affected Martin and fellow lobstermen. “My closure is Mass Bay,” he explained. “It's a 3,000-square-nautical-mile closure, which encompasses all of Cape Cod Bay, all of our Outer Cape, going down off of Nantucket,” and beyond.
